You remember the episode of Seinfeld, when Jerry and George finally get the green light to write the pilot "Jerry". After all the craziness of George comparing himself to Ted Danson and storming out like a lunatic, and the catastrophe with the young girl's cleavage, the duo came through to the other side, where they could actually work and write. Ok. And remember how they were completely at a lost at how to begin-those idiots!
They try to write
That's me! I'm George!
My first full day at the Center, at my desk with the books I need and I am completely lost. I feel like writing. "Once upon a time Greeks came to the Black Sea and they collectively said, 'Hi' and Barbarians said 'Hey, what's up' and then they all went shopping at an emporium." The end, Phd, job, success! It took me 2 hours just to not quite figure out Zotero. I wanted to do something with the bibliography: divide it into sub categories on the various emporia I am studying. Since I don't know how to do this, this is now the greatest impediment to all my studies and pretty much my life. I am blaming the entire unproductive day on Zotero. And this is really how they should promote themselves. "A whole day of surfing the web and playing with Kinder Egg toys brought to you by .... Zotero- Die Entschldigung Macher"
But seriously. On Tuesday there is a lecture on Ancient Thrace at 5pm. So I have decided to just work on Apollonia-Pontica that day and gather all the information on that emporium. I also spent an hour creating a calendar for diss. work. Unfortunately, it was very involved on the iPad. It is the equivalent of using different color markers- and just as productive. I have it rigged so the alarms are various songs that will play every Sunday at 3pm. Next Sunday, I should have a list of all inscriptions and all of the known coinage iconography (if there is any) of Apollonia completed. If I don’t…”Eye of the Tiger” will play to boost me up and keep me going. Like any Rocky movie except III, which was boring. And Mr. T’s whole character is so over the top, it was offensive and a bit racist. On the 16th “I’ll Keep it with Mine”. This should be solemn but inspirational. Also, I swoon thinking of Dylan taking on my many troubles. If I am remembering correctly, he was president of his high school Latin club. I'm sure he can write my dissertation.
These are the Center’s super helpful librarians. They are working downstairs for a few weeks, where I prefer to be because the chairs are more comfortable and they listen to some pop station that plays on a 2 hour loop of Beyonce, Katy Perry, and really old Jay-Z songs. They had no idea about the Throne album, so I played it for them and now they are my friends.
haha! Yes, the loop.
